Lately I’ve been feeling like a Steel Driving Man.
Every time my knuckles start to heal, my hand slips while loosening the the bolts to adjust the roller height on the Windmill… and I literally pound steel. The funny part is how often people actually notice it. It was pointed out at work today but better yet - the minute I sat down to get my hair cut the other day the guy says “it’s always good to see knuckles like that.” I don’t know what he thought I did but he soon found out what I do.
Speaking of John Henry - I had a little race on the Vandercook #4 (hand cranked) against the Windmill (automatic) the other day. Two colors had been printed on each of the Windmills and then I was running a blind (no ink) set up on the 4. As I was finishing that run, the job was being put back on a Windmill to be die-cut. Between me cranking for all I was worth and the Windmill maybe running a little slower than usual, we finished pretty even.
A man ain’t nothin’ but a man, but if you bring that steam drill round, I’ll beat it fair and honest, I’ll die with my hammer in my hand, but I’ll be laughing, because you cant replace a steel drivin’ man
…
John Henry said to the steam drill how is you, pardon me mister steam drill, I suppose you didn’t hear me, I said how you, well can you turn a jack, can you lay a track, can you pick and shovel too, listen this hammer swingers talkin’ to you
…
I’m at the finish line and I ain’t no drill, she’s so far behind you ain’t got the brains to quit it, when she blows up she’ll scatter cross the hills, lord lordy, when she blows up she’ll scatter cross the hills
