“Isn’t the rule for Movember was to start from scratch on Nov. 1?” ~Ryan, an “all around nice guy”
I’ve been getting a lot of these comments/questions and I’ll answer this one the same way I’ve answered the others… (and I’ll ignore the is/was mixup)
First of all- are you sir, participating in Movember?
Secondly- If not, have you donated?
If you answered “yes” to either or both of those questions, then by all means: heckle away and give me all the flack you’d like.
Now here’s my story: I started clean-shaven last year and when I showed up to the Gala event in Boston, all the “award winners” had an easy 3+ months of growth. After seeing that, and knowing that I wouldn’t be able to attend a Gala this year (although I’ve already raised enough for two free tickets to one) in SLC, I decided that a full-blown ‘stache would be a more effective conversation starter for a self-proclaimed spokesperson. So far, I was right.
And if it’s a question of commitment, consider the fact that I grew a beard for two months with the specific purpose of prepping for Movember 2011. Now add to that the funds that I raised last year and have already raised this year.
Finally: If this were “No-Shave November” and the only purpose of the event to simply grow a beard for a month, then sure, that would be a let down for someone to have a head start. But as far as Movember is concerned, I am a firm believer that the cause (and there is a cause btw, it’s not just a group of guys comparing their moustaching prowess) trumps the rules. Besides… I’d say they’re more like guidelines.
I apologize for what some will surely see as an unnecessarily harsh rebuttal but come on now. Really? Let’s not use the internet as a place to point fingers at people we don’t know. Because -SURPRISE!- some of those people are just trying to have a good time supporting a good cause.
In other news, Salt Lake Beardy is up to 13 members and $665 raised! If you would like to prove to Ryan that a bit of an early start is A-OK in your book, as long as it’s in the name of Spokesman-ing and captaining a team, then please spread the word and consider donating here. Thank you!
